When I received the new Age of Conan keyset and Z-board in the mail, I was a little more impressed than I thought I'd be. Admittedly I'm a sucker for bright colors and pretty packaging and the Z-board had that. It was quite attractive. But would it hold up to a week of Age of Conan? Would it be intuitive and handy, or would I just end up going back to my old trusty Logitech G-15? |

At level 53 I did make a trip back to the Noble District to complete the arena quests/challenge in the Armsman's Tavern as well as running the Cistern/Main systems instance and related quests (the entrance is right behind Armsman's Tavern). You can start the arena challenge in your forties, but you have to be 54 to complete the last challenge. That challenge gives you an Epic weapon/shield and you also get many nice blue items on the way to the last challenge. The last 2 challenges require a good group with both a healer and tank in their mid to upper fifties. |
The point of all this is that Howard's lead character all too often gets adapted when, really, it's his Hyborian universe that possesses the depth and interest that has sustained the franchise decades later. Thus enters Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures (AoC), an ambitious MMORPG that has been in development since 2003 and is due to be released on PC shortly with an Xbox 360 version to follow in 2009. |
Like most fantasy RPGs, you start off by creating your character's look, class and so on. Unlike most RPGs the only species you can be is human. This is a fairly direct statement of the kind of experience the player is in for. There are no dwarves, elves or pixies. This isn't Tolkien, this is bawdy, violent dark fantasy – you can choose your gender and race only. This may sound limiting, especially to World of Warcraft fans, but the range and detail you can impose on your character is impressively vast. We stuck with a fairly standard-looking barbarian. Mighty pecs, firm gluts, thick sideburns and a hefty Hyborian mullet. Now that we'd created our barbarian it was time to move onto the game proper. |

Age of Conan??s PvP minigames are intended as ??pick up and play?? fun, something easy to get into solo or with a group of friends, a way to hop right into the action when you want something fast and furious, more akin to an FPS match than traditional MMO combat. |
